Chemical Exposure Increases Risk of Autism?

I saw this article yesterday: Exposure to chemicals while pregnant may increase risk of autism

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, it makes sense to me, since the chemicals listed include pesticides, and my dad was a landscaper during my mom’s pregnancy. If his practices later on are anything to go by, he likely often came home with pesticide residue on his clothes, which my mom would have come into contact with. My dad has never been a big fan of taking precautions.

On the other hand, articles like this just increase people’s perception that people with autism have something wrong with them — some kind of damage.

I would love to just be accepted as I am.

  1. I do think that we are using too many chemicals in our modern world. But I also think that we are too quick to try to ‘blame’ something for things like Autism, Asperger’s etc. Why must Autism be excused? Why MUST it be the result of a bad thing? Why is it easier to try to identify something that us NT’s can then target and concentrate on in order to find a cure. Perhaps the world just isn’t ready for different. Perhaps it is scared of people who are individuals? Who knows. All I know is that autism isn’t a punishment, nor do I think it’s man made. If you look back in history there were likely individuals, some of whom were fucking awesome by the way, who had Autism. this was well befroe pesticides etc. Kazst you are what you are, you are who you are, and whereas you wish to be accepted I just wished that the world was more accepting.
